Berea is an active Daniel Gracie blue belt who competes regularly — the kind of student you build a kids program around. The belt was earned in the same room she now teaches in, under coaches who don't hand them out.
Beyond the gi, Berea trains MMA on the adult fight team. Holding her own in a mixed-discipline room is part of why she's effective in the kids' room — she knows what it actually takes to be a complete martial artist, and she translates that to age-appropriate fundamentals for the youth program.
"A female coach in the kids rotation matters. The girls in the program see someone who looks like them still competing — not just teaching."
— DGTM Coaching StaffBerea is part of the small Kids Program coaching rotation — moving between the Grand Rapids, Holland and Kalamazoo locations to lead youth classes. Discipline, respect and patient technical fundamentals — every kid in the program meets her at some point during the week, and that's by design.
